It’s easier to get things done when you have a goal that inspires you. Last week I met with my Business Acceleration Group and we worked on creating vision and mission statements and then drafted goals that aligned with these statements for each business. The beautiful thing about being your own business owner is that your business goals are directly related to your personal goals.
When you are in business for yourself and set both goals for your business and personal life, I believe you can be even more inspired because you see the linkage between your goals for success in your business and your personal goals every day. When you work for someone else, your personal goals are really just linked to how much money you can earn or save.
For example you might have a goal to save a certain amount of money and when you are able to do that you might buy a new car. When you work for yourself you are driven even harder to grow your business by your personal goals. Maybe you have a dollar amount you want the business to make each month which is then linked to your personal goal of buying a new car. Once you've reached that point in your business, you're then comfortable buying that new car.
See? Your goal helped you focus on your business and grow it to the next level. Having inspiring personal goals will help you grow your business and your business goals will and can have a direct link to the success of your business. Maybe it's a trip or family vacation you want to take in the next year. A small business owner will look at their current income, product offerings and clientele and decide what new items to offer, how they can better serve their clients in order to reach their business goal of making more money to afford the trip they wish to take. The small business owner grows their business, their income and their clients are better served all because of the owner's personal goal of taking his or her family on a vacation.
Having inspiring goals for your business will do the same thing for your business growth. Maybe it's new piece of equipment, new office space, or another employee hire you'd like to make. Business owners will look at their bottom line and see how they can change a few things to increase their market to create a higher income and reach the business goal they have in mind.
Having inspiring goals, whether personal or business, will keep the small business owner focused on their greater vision and mission. Have you looked at your business and personal goals lately? If not it may be time to take a look closely at what you'd like to accomplish by years end. Line up a few fresh goals and map out the small steps you will take to reach these goals and end 2012 with a powerful upswing in your business.
