New Semester and way too many games!

So my second semester of math kicked off yesterday and followed up with e-mails to ensure that all my work carried over to my new class and didn't get left behind in the wake of previous semesters ass kicking.  Now I'm all for free time but I find myself surfing the web.  I think it's more like stuck in the web as I find I need to refocus myself to do something other than click from link to link to link to link.  Hell - if there was an experience and progression system tied together with just clicking links and mix a bit of awesome story to why it was happening then we would have an awesome game on our hands.

So the Dragon Age 2 demo was released last week and that was pure AWESOME. Even if I had no plans on purchasing this game - from a story perspective I believe that Bioware can really bring in a crowd.  The Gameplay has become a lot more responsive and you truly get a sense of exactly how bad-ass your Hawke can be within the first 5 minutes of the demo.  I'm truly excited to mess around with the character progression system and see whats in store for us.  I really hope that how fast you were leveling in the demo stays with actual game release.  I find a ton of fun and enjoyment out of making the character my own and the feeling of getting rewarded for making the choices I make.

This is a bit different as well but i believe everyone who even remotely likes an RPG and owns a DS needs to go find themselves a copy of Radiant Historia.  It pays homage to the class rpg roots and presents it in a neat intriguing little package that screams - "I'm so full of awesome you may need to tell everyone else about me just to feel better"

Next week since I'll be back on track and focused again I'm going to talk about consumer point of view.

INVASION!

Reports of Unidentified Flying Objects are as old as the pyramids or the Inca temples, both of which have been rumored to have been created by our friends from outer space who needed to create navigational aids.

Here are some accounts of UFO sightings from some people you may have heard of before:

John Lennon

John wrote a song Nobody Told Me, about a UFO he claimed to see hovering above his New York City apartment in 1974. He reported that the craft changed shape with each rotation. He and a friend photographed the ship but when they tried to develop the film, it turned out the photos were blank. UFO photos have been reported to draw blank images. So has operating a camera on high grade mescaline.

Police records show that five calls were made to the NYPD reporting UFO sightings in the East Side sky that night.

Gordon "Gordo" Cooper

This accomplished American astronaut reported in a United Nations panel discussion on UFO's in...you guessed it, NYC in 1985.

Here are his exact words from that event:

"I believe that these extraterrestrial vehicles and their crews are visiting this planet from other planets, which obviously are a little more technically advanced than we are here on Earth. I feel that we need to have a top-level, coordinated program to scientifically collect and analyze data from all over the Earth concerning any type of encounter, and to determine how best to interface with these visitors in a friendly fashion."

I agree, Gordo. I want to be friendly to anyone from a planet more technically advanced than we are here on Earth. Sheesh, wonder what their smartphones can do?

Cooper was one of the seven astronauts in Project Mercury, the first manned space effort by the United States. He was also the last astronaut to be launched into orbit alone for an entire solo orbital mission. I imagine you would see some pretty crazy stuff out there all on your own.

Muhammad Ali

The champ. Ali claimed to have seen UFOs hovering over Central Park while working with his trainer, Angelo Dundee.

The two observed a large, round UFO as it came out from behind the city skyline and moved slowly across the sky for about 15 minutes.

In total, Ali claimed a total of 16 sightings.

For what it's worth, each and every one of his opponents reported at least seeing stars once or twice while being indoors.

Ronald Reagan

President Ron is still considered the first president to seriously discuss the possibility of alien invasion. He believed that if such an incident should occur, all of the Earth's nations should unite to fight off the attackers.

This was actually one of the topics he discussed with Mikhail Gorbachev during their first summit meeting in Geneva in 1985.

Jimi Hendrix

This one shouldn't be a surprise, should it? So here's the rundown: Jimi claimed he was followed around by UFOs. He was also allegedly saved from freezing to death in 1965 by an eight-foot angel who thawed the snowdrift in which Jimi's van was stuck.

On a related note, aliens on Pluto have reported sightings of Jimi Hendrix.

Processes and Tea

I've been taking careful notice at the little processes we each do every day.  Some of us call it routines and some of us are simply content not thinking about it.  In each one of these processes I'm starting to try and figure out if there is new and better ways to accomplish the same thing - to innovate in a sense.  One thing that seems to be consistent and watching how people in general do what they do.  I'm not one to pry often but I'm also keen on understanding why.

Now in basic programming everything comes down to what you need a program to do and exactly how it does it.  Understanding different methods and different perspectives on solving problems makes up the core of any programming.  Appreciate for such things comes when you start to notice these things.

On a side note - I think everyone should enjoy a nice cup of tea every once in a while.  It's become my morning process.  Right after brushing teeth and before getting to work.

The Great Story of Miss Martina

Martina. Say that name in tennis circles and it's the other Martina people will be thinking about. While Ms. Navratilova is a legend in her own right, this is a tribute to the "other Martina."

Martina Hingis.

She spent 209 weeks as Women's Tennis Association's number one player.

She won five Grand Slam singles titles. She also won nine Grand Slam women's doubles titles.

Unfortunately, heavy ankle injuries forced her into early retirement at the old age of 22.

So she spends some years having surgeries and riding her horses and returns to the game in 2006.

In November of 2007 she announced her retirement from the sport after testing positive for cocaine.

Martina endured a rollercoaster of ups and downs in her career but when you really take a look at her game, she was one of the best to ever pick up a racquet.

Despite all of the highs and lows though, what many do not realize is what a mouth this girl had on her.

And so now, to celebrate Martina Hingis and her talent and her drive are the best press release statements from the Swiss girl with the iron arm and the acid tongue:

(1) Referring to Amelie Mauresmo's lesbianism on the eve of their 1999 Australian Open final, Hingis told reporters, "She's here with her girlfriend. She's half a man already."

(2) When asked in the late 90s how she felt about the budding rivalry between herself and the then-up-and-coming Anna Kournikova, Martina responded, "What rivalry? I win all the matches."

(3) At the peak of the Williams sisters' and Hingis' competitive and fierce rivalry, Hingis stated in a press conference: "They always have big mouths. They always talk a lot. It's happened before so it's gonna happen again. I don't really worry about that."

And finally:

(4) Responding in a 1999 press conference on why she terminated her doubles partnership with former Wimbledon champion Jana Novotna, Hingis remarked, "She's old and slow."

Acid tongue, liquid arm. Professional tennis is such a weird machine that puts 30 year olds into life long retirement. We enjoyed watching you Martina. You were one of the greatest. Now go wash your mouth out with soap.

Sales vs Marketing

Sales and marketing are closely interlinked and are aimed at increasing revenue. As sales and marketing are closely intertwined, it becomes hard to realise the difference between the two. In small firms, one cannot come across much difference between sales and marketing. But bigger firms have made clear distinction between marketing and sales and they have specialised people handling them independently.
Well, how is that sales and marketing are different? In very simple words, sales can be termed as a process which focuses or targets on individuals or small groups. Marketing on the other hand targets a larger group or the general public.
Marketing includes research (identifying needs of the customer), development of products (producing innovative products) and promoting the product (through advertisements) and create awareness about the product among the consumers. As such marketing means generating leads or prospects. Once the product is out in the market, it is the task of the sales person to persuade the customer to buy the product. Well, sales mean converting the leads or prospects into purchases and orders.
While marketing is aimed at longer terms, sales pertain to shorter goals. Marketing involves a longer process of building a name for a brand and pursuing the customer to buy it even if they do not need it. Whereas sales only involve a short term process of finding the target consumer.
In concept also, sales and marketing have much difference. Sales only focus on converting consumer demand match the product. But marketing targets on meeting the consumer demands.
Marketing can be called as a footboard for sales. It prepares the ground for a sales person to approach a consumer. Marketing as such is not direct and it uses various methods like advertising, brand marketing, public relations, direct mails, and viral marketing for creating an awareness of the product. Sales are really interpersonal interactions. Sales involve one-on-one meetings, networking and calls.
Another difference that is seen between marketing and sales is that the former involves both micro and macro analysis focusing on strategic intentions. On the other hand, sales pertain to the challenges and relations with the customer.
SUMMARY:
1) Sales target on individuals or small groups. Marketing on the other hand targets a larger group on the general public.
2) Marketing means generating leads or prospects sales means converting the leads or prospects into purchases and orders.
