The Secret Library Room Quest

Its hard to miss that lovely little picnic planket outside the library in North New Barkston, click on it to find the details of this quest. You will meet Randy the not-so-secret librarian, and he will probably try to stop you from going into that room!
Before you start the quest (or after, if you were really curious), here are some facts:
  • This quest has no time limit, so you can take your time.
  • He will ask for some random food items.
  • In return he will give you a random PetPedia or Healthpedia.

Restocking Guide

Restocking is a really great way to earn PBs. You will need a fast internet connection to compete with the other restockers, but even if you dont it is still possible to earn money by restocking.
First of all, know where to look and what to look for. Most restockers have a favourite store that they specialise in. I would really reccommend choosing one only one store, so that you get to know the items and how much they are worth. Even the fastest internet connection cannot stop you from buying the wrong items!

The best way to learn about the items you are going to buy is trial and error. Give it a go, and when you have bought the item check its value by looking at other players shops. If the value is less than you paid, then you will know for next time (and I guarantee you wont forget that item!)

Here are some more tips to keep in mind:

  • You dont need a gigantic shop to sell your items. They only cost unnecesary Pbs that could be spent somewhere else.

  • Keep plenty of money with you at all times. You never know when that special item might turn up!

  • You can only buy a maximum of 160 items per day (from the wholesale stores, that is), so be careful of what you buy. (Even though 160 items is usually enough to tire anybody out!)

  • Choose your restocking specialty store wisely. If you have a slower internet connection, go for a quieter store such as the medication outlet. That means you will have less competition, and a better chance of earning Pbs.

  • Research! If you dont have enough Pbs to throw away by trial and error, do a check on the item first. Next time it turns up you will know whether to avoid it or buy it.

  • Stick to it. Its hard at first, because many of the items are new to you. Just keep trying and eventually you will be one of the pro's (heh, and you can sit back and watch while those poor newbies fight over the last scalpal).

Top Ten Powerbuck-Making Schemes

10. Be refferred to Powerpets. If you havnt already got an account on Powerpets you can start out with 5000 Pbs instead of 1000. Follow someones refferal banner (or something like that) and you can earn them money too.

9. Try your luck (or wisdom) on the POWEX stock exchange. A little bit of research and well invested PBs may go a long way! (its still a little risky).

8. Playing Games. Choose a game that you are good at and enjoy playing, this is a great way for some quick PBs and doesnt require too much effort.

7. Write a Book. If you are a good writer, submit a book to Powerpets. If they accept it you will earn money everytime someone reads it.

6.Refferrals. Sign friends up to Powerpets and earn PBs when they play. Just remember that you wont earn any money if they are inactive (or they dont come online very often).

5. Design an Item and submit it to Powerpets (webmaster@powerpets.com). If they want to use your item they will pay you in PBs. Im dont know how much they pay, but I'm sure they will make it worth while.

4. Invest Your PBs. The banks are there for a reason, and they can really help you to earn pbs. Take advantage of the high interest rates on long term savings accounts and the dosh will roll in! You will need to save up a minimum of 100,000 Pbs before doing this, and it wont be available to you while its in the bank, so make sure you dont put it all in at once.

3. Restocking. If you have a fast enough internet connection, restocking is a great way to earn PBs. Read my restocking guide for tips on how to maximise your profits.

2. Collect those freebies!

1. Save Your Pbs. The more you have, the more you can make out of them. There is nothing easier than spending those hard-earned Pbs so this is by far the hardest part - but if you stick to it you will have that item you are saving for in no time!

Transferring PBs

By transferring your PBs from temporary accounts to one main account (instead of cheating on the main account) you can keep the main account unfrozen and keep the Pbs.
Set up trades/swaps then log into your temp account and offer the amount of money you want to transfer.
Its easy to do and will keep your main account safe!

Go to the games area and open Tsearch (or something like it). Play any game, then search for your score on Tsearch (type : double). If more than one find comes up, play the game again and make sure you score higher or lower thn before and search again. Take whatevers left and make its value super high but try to stay within max score.
You will get iced if you are caught doing this, so dont make it too extreme (but if you really have to, try transferring the PBs to a seperate account).

It pays to advertise obesity!

So we have lots of government money to have an anti-obesity strategy and an anti obesity advertising campaign. Now who thought that one up?

They are at each other's throats already, because the food lobby is so strong in the UK. The only change that ever worked that the government ever tried was to say that a "low fat" diet will do the trick. That was fine because no one is addicted to fat and there's not a lot to be made in marketing fat, (except dairy fat perhaps , but who ever got fat solely because they binged on butter?)

The absolutely obvious fact that people get fat because they eat grains and sugars to excess will be conveniently ignored by this project. There are just too many vested interests involved. There is a whole healthy eating campaign that says we must eat whole grains and low fat dairy, but then that will keep everyone eating grains and dairy, so that's OK.

Now what would happen if a paleolithic diet was widely recommended with NO grains NO sugar and NO dairy?

What government body would wear that?

But we can try it. Try three weeks of NO sugar NO wheat (eat the other grains instead) and NO dairy and NO potatoes. You will quickly realise that we eat little else, but after a little adjustment you will be eating the healthiest, most varied diet in the world. Its all in my book, FOOD AND YOU. Try it. You have nothing to lose but your cravings (hmmm.......now there's a nice advertising slogan! But there won't be any money for promoting diets that actually work. That would be much too sensible.)

Narcissistic Personalities

Q. Do Narcissists only love themselves?

Q. Do narcissists only love themselves?
A. Narcissists cannot love the way healthy people do. They profess love in order to be loved back. Narcissists are self centered and so they give only with the expectation of getting something in return. In a healthy relationship loving someone is not dependent upon emotional reciprocity. If your child disapoints you, you do not stop loving him, but the narcissist can hold life-long grudges when they feel slighted by another.

When the admiration begins to waine the narcissists "love" for that person stops as well. Narcissists love the reflection of themselves. In other words, they cannot formulate self love solely on who they are because inside they feel unloveable, so they project a self inflated image for others to see. They may flaunt intelligence, wealth, popularity etc.. When others buy into that projected image, and begin to reflect it back to the narcissist through admiration, awe, or clinging behavior the narcissist is able to love that reflected image of himself.

Q. Can the narcissist live a normal life?
A. Yes and no - what is normal? Narcissists seek after goals that are percieved as superior. They may believe that a higher education will make them important, or that attending a prestigeous university will give them an elevated status. If they haven't the means to reach their lofty goals they may engage in pathological lieing to create the image they believe will elevate their status to others.

The narcissist is the perverbvial name dropper. They derive immediate, but fleeting, self worth by associating themselves with others whom they percieve as superior. They may seek out interactions with those they admire as a way of associating themselves with those who emulate the image they desire. Being accepted into the circle of friendship boosts the narcissts self image and creates another opportunity to name drop at social functions.

Although the narcissist easily finds ways to talk about themselves and to flaunt their superior status, they seldom boast about their achievements directly. To maintain an image of super human ability they act as if their accomplishments were easily achieved. They may feel great shame admitting that they had to work hard to accomplish a goal.

Q. How can one recognize a narcissist?
A. Someone with Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) has a pattern of grandiosity, a need for admiration, and lack of sincere empathy. Narcissists believe that the rules don't apply to them that they are above the law. Consequently they often disregard opinions and expectations from authority figures including police, doctors and those who don't agree with them. They may believe that they can safely drive while intoxicated or that they are intelligent enough to get away with a lie.

Narcissists need people in their life to view them as knowledgeable, charismatic and god-like. Consequently they seek romantic relationships with those who are easily swept off their feet in spite of obvious red flags. Once their lovers realize the narcissists true nature the relationship crumbles and the narcissist quickly finds ways to blame their partner for the break up.

Narcissists present a facade of confidence and of being in control when in fact they are covering for deep-seated insecurity and self hatred. Their ego is so under developed that they crave a constant flow of praise and admiration from others. When the narcissists facade is threatened they may go into overdrive attempting to convince others that they are right and that everyone around them is incompetent or vindictive.

Q. Do narcissists believe their lies?
A. Being exposed as a fraud is their worst fear and they may go to extremes to protect their perceived reputation even at the expense of the lives of those whom they perceive as a threat. Some severely ill narcissists would rather kill their loved ones than risk being caught in a lie. They may go to extremes to protect their elaborate web of denile.

The fragile ego of a narcissist compels them to constantly correct those around them, again, in an attempt to elevate themselves. By correcting grammer, being critical and impressing others with their knowledge they are in essence saying "I know better than you do. You are so inept that you need me to help you live your life the right way." They buy into their own lie but deep inside they feel like a fraud.

Q. How can I help someone who has narcissistic tendencies?
A. Helping a narcissist isn't easy. They see fault in everyone but themselves so pointing out their arrogant and abusive behaviors is likely to fall on deaf ears. NPD is a personality disorder which means that the assocdiated traits have been there most of their life. Because of this they are unlikely to change.

Step #5: Using commands' outputs

Now that we're done with data handling, we're skipping the part about statistical analysis commands (regressions and the like). The next four steps will deal with automation of the analyses. This step is actually a preface to the next three steps which deal with automation. As you know, Stata can run each command separately in the command window. It is also possible to save all the commands in a ".do" file and rerun all of them whenever you like. Since programs tend to run the same commands again and again, we would like to automate some of the commands. It will also help us organize our analysis and report the results in a neat table instead of with the regular text output of Stata. To do that, we will go through steps 5-8.

Don't worry if you don't understand why we're doing what we're doing in this chapter. That will be clearer in the following chapter.
The most basic statistical command in Stata is probably summarize. I'm relying on the fact that the reader is familiar with this command. If this is not the case, I think a more basic tutorial will fit you before going through this one.
So, let's say that I run this command (su is an abbreviation for summarize)

Now, what can you do if you want to use one of the statistics, for example, to calculate something with it? Suppose we want to calculate how much is 2 standard deviations. We see how much is one standard deviation (.409255) so we can manually calculate 2 * .409255:

But what happens if we're in a program, or if we want to use a more precise measure of standard error (Stata saves more than 6 figures after the dot)? In a program, we could not write "di 2*.409255". We can, but it will be bad coding. We would have to first run the program, get the standard deviation and then write it in the code. Moreover, if we just slightly change the data in the future, we will need to fix the code itself.
The solution is rather simple. Many commands keep their calculations for later use as scalars, vectors or macros. To see which calculations the summarize command saved, lets run "return list":

See, the command "return list" lists the scalars that the summarize command saves. Summarize, specifically, saves the calculations for the last variable specified (in our case it was just one). Now, we can run in our code, if we want to calculated generally 2 standard deviation of the variable we can simply run two commands:

This way, we didn't use the actual s.d in our command, but rather the r(sd) word. Stata replaced r(sd) with the value saved by the summarize command.
This trick can be done with other commands. Actually with all programs that are in the rclass category. I don't know where the rclass word came from, but I do know that it means that the scalars will be saved in r(something) command.

Another class of commands is the eclass commands. The command regress is one of them. If we will run reg, we can then look for saved values with "ereturn list":

We got the scalars (numbers) that are related to the regression (root MSE, number of observations, F-statistic, R-squared etc.) but also macros (which I personally never use) and most importantly: matrices. One is e(b) which is actually a vector of the coefficients (a matrix of 1 row and 2 columns) , and the other is e(V) which is the coefficients covariance matrix. Let's take a look at them:

And we see, indeed, the coefficients from the regression in e(b). Compare the output of the matrix list e(b) command and the output from the reg command. The e(V) matrix is a bit less self-evident. Remember that the covariance between a variable and itself is its variance. So the coefficient's standard error is actually the square-root of the value it has in the diagonal.
There is, however, a shorter way to reach the coefficient and the standard error. Instead of using the matrices, you can simply refer to the coefficient's value with the _b[] ... thing (I don't know how to call it). In order to get the value of the coefficient of x, put x between the brackets: _b[x] has the coefficient of x from the last regression. So now you can have your program calculate the "effect" of having 3 more rooms and not just one (or just save that number in order to report it in a table later). Also, in order to get the standard error, use _b[]'s brother, which is _se[]. That is:

As long as you didn't run another eclass command, the calculations from the last program will be available for you to use. Once you run the next eclass command (for example, another regression), the saved output will be replaced by the new command's output. The same goes for the rclass commands, but separately. That is, if you run an rclass command, it will not "step on" the eclass command's results, but only the last rclass command's results.

In order to put the results aside for later use (before running the next eclass or rclass command), we will learn how to use macros - in the next chapter.

(Go on to Step #6)

Social Awareness and Mental Disorders

Mental illness has long been a social taboo. But the fact is that mental illness is as common as the common cold. Nearly everyone has symptoms from time to time. Depression is a mental illness and almost half of the population will suffer with a serious depression at some point in their life. ADD and ADHD are mental disorders and although they are both widely over diagnosed it seems that people have little or no problem labeling themselves or their children with one or the other.

The difference between these disorders, and others that are less acceptable, is education and mass understanding. The more society knows about a mental illness the more they are able to talk about it, and the more the fog lifts that has kept it mysterious and frightening. The mentally ill person has never been the root of cultural fears. The fear lies within the individual who is afraid of what they do not understand.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM IV) is the mental health worker's "Bible" for determining which mental disorder is appropriate for a patient. Some of the listings that are not as well know to the general public are sleep disorders such as insomnia, childhood disorders such as Mathematics Disorder, and substance disorders such as Nicotine Use Disorder. Of course there are specific criteria that needs to be present in order to be given such a diagnosis, but I mention them to make a point. No one is completely immune to developing a problem that needs psychological attention.
