When Spin Makes You Buy a Lie

It was Tony Robinson, I think, who talked about reframing the bad things that happened in one’s life. That way, one could look at them in a positive light, and if one looked at things in a positive light, then, he reasoned, one could continue to be motivated and do the best one could with what one had.

As with all things, theories need to be tested in order to evaluate whether they have solid legs or not. So I’m going to do a brief test here.

Reframing the Truth In Order to Make it More Acceptable
This lovely little girl who was an ardent Christian has been brutally murdered, raped, and tortured for three or four days before she died. Her murderer reframes while in court. He says, “She loved the Lord so much and she said she would suffer for her faith. I gave her what she ardently desired - suffering for her Lord and an early opportunity to meet him.”

No, I didn’t think so. Reframing things - or spin - is just another word for a lie. Spin is always a case of someone trying to convince you that telling yourself a lie would make it easier for you to cope. You can see from the above example, can’t you, that it has its not the best way of handling life, is it.



Spin is also a way - and this serious - of making others control you and getting you to buy or accept something you would never have previously considered if it hadn't been presented to you in the way it had been presented!

Capitalism and Spin: How Advertising Makes You Buy the Lie!
Do you honestly believe that putting yourself into debt for the top of the line BMW is going to garner you the girls and create your bliss? You do? Good grief. Read how your brain is fooling you. Okay, but the rest of you understand that the only purpose of advertising is to make you buy something for someone else’s profit/benefit.

Politics and Spin
You also understand that politicians turn things around in clothe them in a different light so that they can get by you, don’t you? Yes, I knew you did! Incidentally, that’s the reason for the constant flip flops and lies by so many of these people. They really, really don’t give a damn about you. They just need your support in order to get where they want to be so that they can use and abuse you some more.

Commerce and Spin.
Trade plays a very important part in our community. No one can do it all. We need each other in order to contribute different things to the community.  But do we really need to invest in lies in order to promote consumerism with built in obsolescence? Doesn’t this defeat the purpose of living a good life with lots of free time, healthy food, and a safe community?

A Better Way Without the Spin
How about we stop this obsession with ‘hard work’ and start figuring out how we can meet all of humanity’s needs (we’ve got great technology to do this now), and revert to the way our ancestors lived - a twenty hour work week. I’m pretty sure we’ll all be happier and healthier.
