How To Save Money On Tile Remodels
The economy struggling under unnecessary economic pressure is forcing homeowners to don work clothes, dust masks, and knee pads to save money on their next remodel. Demolition is one thing that homeowners can do at the delight of tile installers, for the most part and as long as it is done correctly.
When you begin a tile demolition on a floor or say a tiled tub wall, you need to know how it was built to make it easier to remove.
In a tube shower wall, the plumbing contractor was looking at a 3 foot x 5 foot sheet rocked area for the tube. He installed the tub, then the contractor installed green board on the edge of the tub and around it. Then the tile contractor tiled the space. Because the tile contractor used bull nose trim up the sides of the tile and across the top you know there is most likely green boad under the tile.
When in demolition of a tub shower wall, measure up 4 foot above the top of the tub. Behind the tile there will be a seam between two sheets of blue board. Use a hammer and bust a line through the tile along a line 4 feet above the tub. Behind the tile you can exploit that seam to remove the green board with the tile still attached. It is far easier to remove say 4'x4' slabs of green board with the tile still attached than dealing with thousands of tiny shards of tile, dusty green board, and any other stuff in there.
Simple tear out. |
As you can see from this tear out I did some time ago, virtually all the tile is still intact. If you are keeping the tub you will need to tape couple layers of cardboard or use some 1/2 inch plywood or something to cover the tub porcelain to protect it. You can do it too with U-Haul type shipping blankets. The bottom line is not to chip the tub which will do so easily. If you do chip the porcelain, you can fix that with porcelain paint you can find in your local paint department. Some of it is epoxy. The best practice is don't chip it. (Savings about $400.00)
This is one of the simplest things you can do to save as much as $600 on your next bathroom remodel. Look for closeouts at your big box stores and Floor and Decore. Remember, a close out means if you run short you may not find the right tile to finish the job so be sure to buy in excess of what is needed but the savings could well be worth it. Expect over 50% off on closeouts.
On a floor, it will be a matter of the proper equipment and brute force. Although I have removed many a tile floor with little more than a good hammer, dust pan, and contractor plastic bags, using power tools will make the job go faster.
You can rent a Chipping hammer for about $40 bucks for a 1/2 day or there about. Be sure to get a an 1" and 1/2 flat chipping bit if not larger to help bust up the tile. I scoop up the broken tile and drop it into a 5 gallon bucket. You will find if you are placing the broken tile in plastic contractor bags to haul it off, a 5 gallon bucket is about the right size weight wise for the plastic bags. It is easier to fill a 5 gallon bucket and dump it into a wheel borrow or plastic bags.
After you have removed the tile, use a 4 inch blade scraper to remove any remaining thinset or grout. After all the tile is removed it is a good idea to mop up the dust with a mop and bucket. When you grease and flour a cake pan to keep the cake mix from sticking to the sides of the pan, so too can dust on the keep the thinset from adhering to the concrete.
Always wear safety lenses, a dust mask and certainly gloves when handling tile. The surface of ceramic tile is glass and will slice you open like a Thanksgiving Turkey with relative ease. Be sure to get and wear knee pads.
Seal the tile and grout yourself. Give it about 24 hours to dry then apply the sealer. I use a sponge and spray bottle a'la WIndex or something like that. It is important that you remove the excess with paper towels vigorously to keep from leaving streaks and dry the surface. This is to keep you from tracking the sealer all over your other floors like hardwood for instance. If you do happen to do that, get sealer on your hardwood finish, get a dry terrycloth towel and buff it out. You can save anywhere from $75 to $150 by sealing the install yourself.
Cash. You may be able to get a discount from a contractor if you offer to pay in cash. This gives the contractor an attractive option and it is his business how he handles incoming revenue.
There you have it, I have listed about 4 things you can do to save about $1000 or more on your next remodel. Of course these are generalities but this is how you can save nonetheless.

Skin v. Shirt
Our school has two gyms ok? So yesterday during basketball practice, the boys, who were in gym 2, were playing shirts v skins and we (the girls) were playing basketball in gym 1. So of course when they saw the boys take their shirts off, they went all googly eyed and of course, that made us get in trouble, we had to run a suicide and do a lot of running back and forth's, all because of those girls!
You should know, none of the boys in the middle school is that hot! Maybe with their shirts on but definitely not with their shirts off and that's because none of them are that ripped! They don't have like giant muscles and abs and stuff, they're all either skin and bones, or overweight fat people so I don't see what the big deal was. I admit, maybe if it were the guys from high school, I would be staring a bit too because some of those high school guys have some pretty nice muscles! But I mean, c'mon! We're talking about middle school guys here! They haven't grown all their muscles and stuff yet! So yeah, that's what happened yesterday during gym. I don't think that they should've done shirts v skins in middle school in the first place but ok, whatever!

Ois saudosos,

Well, I suppose it was bound to happen. But yesterday was a hard day for both Luke and me. I had no idea how much I pinned my hopes on his good days. I'm not going to lie, it was hard to see that change. What's scary is that considering his circumstances, it was still a really good day!
I got there around 10:00 am, after I got the older kids to school. Grandma Call had spent the night, and according to her report he had another good night of sleep. But apparently his hemoglobin counts were such that it was time for Luke to have his first blood transfusion sometime that day. For some reason (and I know this is going to seem like a "duh" moment), that news really freaked me out. It is really routine, and it's in no way significant that he's getting his first at this point in treatment. He's going to be getting a lot of transfusions over the course of his treatment. But the thought of someone else's blood going into my baby's body really freaked me out.
But we had some time. So we spent the morning hanging out. Luke was off of his IV again, and he actually didn't have his NG tube in either, as you can see from the picture. Apparently, he worked some magic and managed to pull the entire thing out that morning before I got there, and the nurse figured there was no sense in putting it back in until bedtime. Luke was totally on board for that! And I enjoyed seeing that beautiful face without a tube hanging out of his cute nose.
He nursed great that morning, but as the day wore on, he became less and less interested in eating. Which made me all the more anxious. I hate it when he doesn't eat. He received his chemo at 2:00 pm again, and mostly slept through it. The blood transfusion started at about 3:00 pm, and was set to be administered over a three hour period. I had to sign consent while they told me all about everything that can go wrong. Not that they expect any of that, and it's all exceptionally rare, but really? How is that supposed to be comforting to the mother of the statistical anomaly? :) But I kept my whits about me. Danny's Dad, "Papa", showed up at this point to relieve me and send me home so I could high-five Danny out the door to the hospital to spend the night with Luke. On my way out of the hospital, Danny sends me the following text: I think we've lost Johnny...The kid is a maniac, he was tough to handle before this all started. He has actually done amazingly well, but I think it has finally taken its toll...And Sophie is sitting at the table singing "Rachel is dead and Luke is in the hospital!" At this point, my emotions got the best of me and I broke down and cried the whole drive home. I was terrified to come home to my oldest three who desperately need their Mom right now. Their whole universe has just gone crazy, and they need me now to try to make sense of their world. And it broke my already broken heart just that much more to realize that I had nothing left to give them. That I was going to walk in that door barely keeping myself together as it was.
Luckily for me, the Lord saw fit to bless me with the most amazing older sister. When I was younger, about 14 years old, I had an irrational fear of thunderstorms. They would induce a panic attack every time. I remember calling Jami when I would see dark clouds on the horizon. I knew there was nothing she could do about the storm, but I knew she could make me feel better. There was definitely a storm on my horizon last night, and I felt like a 14 year-old version of myself as I dialed her number. And she didn't disappoint! She gave me the time to vent and cry, and then gave me some really great suggestions of how to handle the kids that night. I followed her advice and was able to manage until and through bedtime.
I had an experience with Sophie while trying to get her to sleep. Sophie has a very tender connection to her Aunt Rachel, who is my youngest sister. Rachel passed away December 1, 2009 (almost exactly 3 years ago) in a car accident when she was on the cusp of 17 years old. Sophie was only just over a year old. But in the last 6 months or so, she has asked about Rachel a lot. She talks about her, and how much she misses her. She asks questions about the resurrection, and has to have a picture of Rachel in her room. I've often wondered why Rachel is so important to her, but I've chalked it up to the fact that we just don't understand how relationships work beyond the veil, and before we came to earth. Perhaps Sophie and Rachel are closer than I know.
Something happened in the bedtime routine that upset Sophie, and I can't remember now what it was. But she started crying, and saying "I just want Aunt Rachel to come home!" I found myself with Sophie on my lap, trying to explain that we have two homes. Our homes here on earth with our family, and our home with Heavenly Father in heaven. And that sometimes, Heavenly Father asks us to come home to His home. And that eventually, we'll all be together there with Heavenly Father in His home. I cried all through that explanation, and pleaded with my Father that I was not laying the groundwork for her losing her little brother. It was a heart-wrenching night, and I sobbed and sobbed. After Sophie was asleep, that is. But in the end, the same comfort came that assured me that all is in God's hands. If anything, I needed that emotional catharsis. I think it had more than a small hand in me sleeping well last night for the first time in days.
I'm on my way now to see my sweet boy. Danny had the chance to spend the day with him today, and he said that Luke was still just not feeling well. I miss my little guy, and I just can't wait til we can bring him home.

November 30 - Math 7
We started with a review of working with decimals... adding and subtracting and quickly entered into multiplication of decimals an two digit numbers,
What was quickly recognized was that many students have forgotten the basic skill of multiplying numbers without a calculator. So, we spent the majority of our math block, and then all of our science block reviewing the concept and practicing the 3 basic skills (adding, subtracting and multiplying decimal), and well as rounding and estimating.
Students were given a practice package and asked to complete from page 135 - 140. As a result of our use of the Science class for review and practice, the Science Test originally planned for Monday will be pushed off until Wednesday.

Moving to Asia - Basic Tips
Moving always needs good planning. The longer the things are organized, the better the result is at the end. When changing the country and in this case the continent, things get very difficult, they will also consume much time, finance and research.
Time is the most valuable thing. Moving to a new continent will acquire at least three months of preparation. The service that are used in the former home have to be cancelled on time in order not to be made to pay for something, that one was not using. It will also make the people moving more secure, because when there are devices working in an empty house, the risk from accidents increase significantly.
The health insurance is basic step. Many countries in Asia has high standard of life, close to the one in Europe and USA and even higher. Some though are not still taking good care about their own citizens, so the foreigners can not hope for better treatment.
Keeping that in mind is good idea to make good research and find good clinics and hospitals, also the legal ways to use the insurance system of the new country, because the access to it is not easy in each country. To solve this problem and to have good medical help in Asia is priceless. There are many websites, which provide very useful information. On request they will supply with the information about the fees and the best places to be visited for the foreigners living in the country you are going to move to. Back to the moving process like any other far destination moving to Asia will require the transportation of the belongings in container, which will be shipped.
Revising the things that will be packed and carried to the new home is essential. Remember only the most important things have to be taken. What can be bought there and is not so significant should stay on the old place.
Insure the luggage at the departure. No matter how perfect it has been packed no one will give one hundred percent that the there will be nothing broken or lost. Long destinations always bring big risks with them.
When the luggage is finally arrived there is no other choice but to look for a local moving company to help with the last steps.
