H. maughanii has abruptly truncated leaves with leaves arranged in a spiral, it is very slowly proliferous. The leave truncated end areas can be translucent, opaque variously veined. The end-area margins may be scabrous and variously crispate or undulate. It is very variable species. Similar to H. truncata, it grows burried in the ground with just the leave tips visible. In cultivation it stays above the soil.

H. maughanii grows to the South of Calitzdorp. It occupies a very small habitat within the western borders of H. truncata distribution area. Sometimes it shares habitat with H. trunacata forma crassa and it forms all degree of hybrids in between these two species.
H. maughanii is a common and still very wanted species in cultivation, propagation can by done by seed, offsett or leave and root cutting. It has a large potential for hybridizing.
