The Exhibitionists meet in Derby on the first Wednesday of each month to discuss art with like minded people. They discuss current and future, local and national, exhibitions in a relaxed atmosphere over a drink.  The aim is to visit chosen exhibitions within the month with other group members, or on your own, to review at the next meeting.  


This month they met at Derby Museum and Art Gallery where Andrea Hadley-Johnson talked to them about Can You Hear Me Now?

Andrea Hadley-Johnson, Derby Museum and Art Gallery Exhibitions Officer, talked us through her curation process working with artists Stephen Carley and Anna Mawby to create ‘Can You Hear Me Now’.

Andrea talked us through the journey, from her initial inception of this project; Starting with an exploration of the personal/private lives that public and celebrities live through social media. How we share our intimate details with strangers on twitter and so forth,  yet hide those lives in other ways. And how easily these off hand moments of honesty in the public domain can snowball into a life of their own.

This initial idea led to Andrea, Stephen and Anna inviting the public to share their responses on a series of emotions, which led to some very honest and frank answers as the public of Derby laid themselves bare. Khyati Koria-Green (Assistant Exhibitions Officer at DMAG) expressed her surprise at the honesty of the public’s responses to the ‘Can You Hear Me Now’ questions, and how many of the public expressed that they found the experience a cathartic ‘offloading’ experience.

Anna Mawby and Stephen Carley, became custodians of these emotions and created work in direct response to those statements, with Andrea Hadley-Johnson guiding their journey; the results are ‘Can You Hear Me Now’.  An exhibition which touches everyone as we remember that our feelings are not as unique as we might at first think. Their artistic responses hold the statements respectfully, while playfully exploring what it is to be human in a confused world.
