So I've gotten an influx of bad montages recently (more than usual), so I thought I would give some simple pointers to help people out. And unlike usually, I'm going to actually keep it short and simple this time. Nah, who am I kidding.
1. Keep it short - From what I've seen, people have a strong attachment to their clips and as a result, aren't able to judge them critically enough to take out clips that are mediocre/only good from their own perspective. If you're trying to make a montage that is remembered by the community, you must overcome this bias and really trim the fat. Have anybody who can provide you with an objective perspective (friends, random people in the Halo community, etc) to go over your clips and give you honest opinions. You will also want to do this with your finished montage. Remember, my minimum montage length is 2 minutes; feel free to use it and remember: Would you rather be that guy with that absolutely bonkers 2-3 minute montage or that guy with a fairly good 7-8 minute one?
2. Keep it simple - The last 3 user submitted montages I watched were plagued with useless, ugly color correction and poorly done, overused effects (blood splatters, motion blur). When in doubt, just leave these out. It will save you time, and not having these things won't actively hurt you while poorly applying them will. Often times, the best color correction is absolutely no color correction whatsoever. Also, these 3 montages were also randomly super bright, so yeah, don't do that either.
3. Audio/Video sync comes first - There is absolutely no exception to this. If you're an inexperienced editor, this applies even more to you. Without proper syncing, your editing job will suck. With proper syncing, your editing is pretty much at least solid by default.
4. Don't overlay credits text over credits footage - This is a minor gripe of mine, but it's bothered me for a long time now. There's little to no reason to include credits footage if you're going to be obstruct it and make it hard to watch anyways. Have the credits text play on one side while the credits gameplay plays on the other. Voila.
Video Submission Rules
1. Do not send me messages asking me to post things without an actual video - These messages usually come in the form of, "Will you post this video of mine when it's done?" Well, if I say, "Yes", I would be giving you the power to have me post anything you want, no matter how terrible it is, and if I say, "No", then that's being plain unfair. I've always wanted to just reply, "No", to these types of messages and see how they respond, but that would be pretty mean. But one day, I might snap and break somebody's feelings, so again, please don't send me these types of messages.
2. Send non-tricking stuff to me via YouTube PM via attached video - Keepvid is awesome, so do everything through YouTube please. You can also copy-paste the YouTube link and make me waste 1-2 extra seconds copy-pasting it myself if you just like randomly griefing people.
For tricking videos (trick jumping, launching, etc), send them to the head of my tricking council, Skulk. You can contact him at his YouTube channel here: Skulk's YouTube Channel
3. Anything rolls as long as it's Halo related - Pretty much anything besides machinima (I'm not a machinima guy, so I can't judge them properly) is good to go (montages, clips, gameplays, music videos, tutorials, etc). But yeah, feel free to send me machinima too, so I can post them and see people comment, "Hey man, you should leave machinima to post the machini- holy fuck, this machinima is incredibly well written and features a very talented panel of voice actors. Exception made."
4. At least try to sound literate - I'm by no means a grammar nazi, but it really, really sucks to wade through a random jumble of letters vaguely resembling a message only to reach a montage that's arguably worse than the clusterfuck of a message that preceded it. Again, just try to sound literate, and if you actually do spell/punctuate everything correctly, then you'll get a free e-cookie and e-high-five from me.
5. Make it clear that you want me to post the video - Self explanatory. Use your words.
After you send me your video, it will be reviewed by me along with a council of advisors (for more information, you can go here: http://gear61sblog.blogspot.com/2012/09/my-new-montage-council.html). Due to my busy schedule, I almost certainly won't be able to respond to your submissions. If your video isn't uploaded within 2 weeks, assume that it has been rejected. IF YOU RESEND ME YOUR VIDEO WITHIN THIS TIMESPAN, YOUR VIDEO WILL BE PURPOSELY DELAYED FOR CLOGGING UP MY INBOX AND PREVENTING ME FROM GETTING TO OTHER PEOPLE'S VIDEOS.
