Wish you had a way to keep the clutter at bay in your home during the day? Wish you could open the front door to a neighbor without worrying about the clutter scattered around the house? If you answered YES, then you are reading the right blog!
I have a solution to this problem. It's the clutter basket. If you have a two-story home, you will probably want to have two baskets. Keep one basket by the stairs and the second one in the high traffic area of your home. During the day as family members leave items around the home you can quickly pick them up and toss them in the basket(s). Be sure to use the basket near the stairs for items that need to be carried upstairs and put away. Having these baskets in your home allows you to open that front door without worry that items are strewn around the home are making it look messy and unkempt.
My favorite part of the clutter basket idea is the ease it creates when you are clearing the items out of the basket and putting them away. Instead of taking one item at a time into each room, the basket allows you to carry everything you've collected during the day into each room and put everything you've put into the basket that belongs in that room away in one "sweep."
For me this helps eliminate what I call the "circling effect." The "circling effect" is something we all do and frankly it drives me crazy.
The "circling effect" is when you go into one room to put something away and instead of staying on task something catches your eye and you get off the task at hand or get into another room and think to yourself "what am I doing in here?" Having the basket with items that need to be put away can really keep you focused on the task at hand.
When you kids are a bit older one of their chores could be to empty out the baskets and put those items away. By having a chore that's easily managed by little ones you will be teaching your children a valuable lesson about being neat and being responsibile at an early age.
