Ray Lewis and Children's Ministry

Above all else, a leader must… The greatest quality has to be service hood. When you build, you build from inside out, and that chemistry has to carry you. When you serve others, when you have that service as a duty, it will make other people do anything for you.
-Ray Lewis, Sporting News Magazine (May, 2011)

Now that is a quote. For someone to be in the league as long as he has, and done what he has done…I’ll listen to him! Seriously, think modern day defense in the NFL and his name has to come up. From what I’ve read and seen, opposing teams fear him but his locker room cheers for him. He gets the Ravens fired up before the game and during half time. What’s even better than that is watching him on the sidelines. He is constantly encouraging or reinforcing the belief that they can shut down any quarterback. He is in constant motion, always running with that vision.

What sticks out to me the most is the first line, “The greatest quality has to be service hood.” For someone that makes millions, on the cover of countless sports magazines, TV commercials, and once the face of Madden video games…that says a lot. So maybe we aren’t in front of thousands of crowds this Sunday like Lewis will be next fall. Maybe none of us will ever make the cover of Madden. Maybe we will only be in front of dozen or 400 kids and leaders. It doesn’t matter. It’s about serving others. My prayer is that I would have that same mentality and drive to build my team up the way Ray Lewis has built the Ravens Defense up.
